Working from home can be a savings and a convenience, but also a challenge.  See some tips below on how to be effective when working from home:

Designated Workspace - that is private and minimizes distractions when working.  Choose a space that is comfortable, but professional and make sure family and pets stay out when work is in progress!

Disciplined Schedule - that is clearly communicated to family members when you can be accessible.  Be disciplined when working - be at work, when on a break - get out of your workspace and exercise or re-energize yourself by your preferred method.  Remember, stick to your schedule to get as much accomplished as possible, while taking scheduled breaks to keep your energy up.

Dress for Work, not Home by maintaining a professional working environment and appearance just like if you were at the office.

Make a Work to Do List - that prioritizes your tasks from toughest to easiest and always tackle the tough ones first!

Set times for checking email and IMs throughout your day.  If you are constantly checking emails or instant messages, it can interrupt your workflow and keep you from getting as much accomplished.

Stay Connected with your teammates at work by scheduling video calls to share ideas on how to improve collaboration and communication.

Keep a Set Routine - Get ready for work like you are going to the office, take your morning run, a hot shower and a good breakfast so you feel refreshed when you start work.  Similarly, create a routine of wrapping up your workday and decompress by reflecting on what you accomplished that day, including lessons learned, and then shut the door to work and focus on family, pets & friends or what you like to do most.

Focus on time management, good communication, and having a teamwork attitude.  Share with HR any challenges you are experiencing working from home and be open to new ideas about succeeding in today's virtual working environment.
